Connecting Generations: Metropolis Now

03 Apr 2014

Organised by: Swiss Re Centre for Global Dialogue

About the event

Metropolis Now: Can our cities cope with catastrophes?

Floods, storms, earthquakes and other natural disasters affect millions of people every year and can cause significant economic damage, particularly in the world's sprawling urban centres. Such losses are becoming more frequent and severe due to the concentration of assets in disaster prone areas and climate change. If nothing is done, climate change could cost the world economy around 20% of global GDP by the end of this century.

How can we avert the potential damage from natural disasters? How can we best protect urban communities, and with what measures? What investments will be required to fund those measures - and will the benefits of those investments outweigh the costs?

At this "Connecting Generations" event, insurance industry experts, city officials and researchers will present their latest thinking on climate change and natural disaster risk and discuss possible solutions to the challenges we face.

You can join the discussion  on climate and natural disaster risk at our Open Minds blog!

The Swiss Re 150 year anniversary event series 'connecting generations' brings together international experts, entrepreneurs and practitioners to discuss current and future economic, political and societal risks and opportunities.
