President, foodwaste.ch; Researcher, Institute for Environmental Decisions, ETH Zurich
Claudio Beretta is doing his PhD at the Institute for Environmental Decisions at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH), analyzing the ecological impact of food losses in Switzerland and its reduction potential. He studied environmental science at ETH with a major in forest and landscape management and a minor in sustainable energy technologies.
After three months at an English language school in Bristol, UK, Mr Beretta did an internship at the University of Arizona on the reaction of specific plant species to climate change. Back in Switzerland, he gained experience in environmental communication in the private office Communication and Care in Lucerne. He then wrote his master thesis “Quantifying food losses and the potential for reduction in Switzerland” and published it in December 2011 in the journal Waste Management. Based on this first scientific estimation of the amount of food losses in Switzerland he co-founded the association foodwaste.ch, destined to reduce food losses at the various stages of the food value chain.
Since September 2013, Mr Beretta has primarily been working on his PhD. In addition, he has a part-time position at foodwaste.ch, representing the link to science.
