Risk Talk on human enhancement: transcending human limits

02 Jul 2013

Organised by: Swiss Re Centre for Global Dialogue

Information

The Risk Talk series organised by the Swiss Re Centre for Global Dialogue brings together international experts and practitioners to discuss current and future economic, political and societal risks and opportunities.

"We run on dynamite," stated Francis Pélissier, referring to a pharmacy of performance enhancers employed by cyclists in the early Tour de France. Cycling has come full circle and through numerous scandals now has the most substantial anti-doping controls in the world.

Enhancement, however, is another question. Sleeping in an oxygen tent is standard for top cyclists and other endurance competitors. Diets are strictly regulated, with vitamin and mineral supplements routine. High glucose and caffeinated drinks are available throughout races.

And this is a world not confined to elite athletes. Coffee, the most consumed stimulant in the world, is available in every work place. Want to concentrate better? Around 25% of US college students are estimated to take the drug Ritalin, prescribed for attention deficit disorder. What about mood improvers? Energy boosters? Sleep enhancers?

Performance enhancers raise a variety of concerns: questions of legality, of fairness, of morality and of short term gains against long term health implications. Performance enhancers not only affect competitive sport, but our daily lives in general. Given the broad sweep of our business, it is an issue with potential impact for Swiss Re.

The presenters at the Risk Talk are:

  • Vanya Loroch, CEO and Senior Trainer, Loroch Communication & Training in Life Sciences
  • Matthias Kamber, Director, Antidoping Switzerland
  • Thomas A. Kolditz, Director, Leadership Development Program, Yale School of Management; former Head of the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York

The panel discussion will be moderated by Christoph Nabholz, Head Business Development, Swiss Re Centre for Global Dialogue.
