Risk Talk on the Global Risks Report 2014: Generation lost

6 March 2014, 18:00 - 19:30

Organised by: Swiss Reinsurance Company Ltd

Information

The Risk Talk series of the Swiss Re Centre for Global Dialogue brings together international experts and practitioners to discuss current and future economic, political and societal risks and opportunities.

After last year's Risk Talk on resilience, this event examined the challenges facing the so-called Millennials, young people born roughly between the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Millennium (1990-2000). Among the topics discussed were strategies to counter the problem of chronic youth unemployment across many countries which is preventing the young generations' efforts to gain professional experience, earn income, and generate savings.

Swiss Re collaborates with the World Economic Forum (WEF) on the annual Global Risks Report. We will examine the proposals the Global Risks Report makes to tackle youth unemployment. These include recalibrating education and immigration policies. For example, part of the educational challenge facing young people entering the labour markets in many developed economies is that they have too often been trained in disciplines that do not match their country's economic needs.

The presenters at the Risk Talk were:

  • Philippe Brahin, Head Governmental Affairs & Sustainability, Swiss Re
  • Jennifer Blanke, Chief Economist, Senior Director, World Economic Forum
  • Afonso Reis, Founder and Mentor, Mentes Empreendedoras
  • Rainer Egloff, Senior Emerging Risk Manager, Swiss Re

Summary

"Even the leaders who understood the magnitude of the financial crisis, and saw what was coming, didn’t do anything. And that scared me! Society needs to engage more, and we need better leadership!” These are the words of Afonso Reis, Founder of Mentes Empreendedoras (Entrepreneurial Minds) at the annual Global Risks Report Risk Talk at CGD, which took place on 6 March 2014.
