The dramatic growth of the human population is placing increasing constraints on agriculture and food production, a fact which is currently overshadowed only by the crisis in global financial and industrial markets.

Climate change, expanding urbanisation and shifting dietary preferences will have profound and long term impacts on food security, not only for developing countries but also for the developed world. A clear and rational assessment of future agricultural challenges, and an ability to price and underwrite the benefits and risks of new agricultural technologies of food production, can only come from a thorough knowledge of past breeding practices and the function of our crop plants in a rapidly changing environment.
