23andMe consumer genetic testing – a challenge to the insurance industry?

In autumn 2014 the US based direct to consumer (DTC) genetic testingcompany 23andMe, an industry leader in this field, received regulatory approval for marketing their personal genetic testing services to UK and Canadian consumers. Backed by Google, the firm offers personal screening to test for inherited genetic risk factors associated with diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer’s. Their stated claim to customers is to help them better understand how their genes may affect their health and to take informed and proactive health decisions.
